Art history made as new art gallery opens in Sandton

The much awaited opening of 132 Art Gallery at 11 Alice Lane in Sandton this week on Tuesday attracted several people, who came to witness art history in the making. Those who came to the opening of the group exhibition, marking a milestone by the owners George Mulaudzi and his partner Tumi Tshikalaha, included mainly arts enthusiasts, collectors and artists who attended in big numbers.

Some came from as far as Limpopo for this event. Well situated in the heart of Sandton, 132 Art Gallery promises to be a light in this mainly corporate and shopping environment, making investment quality art available to a well-to do market in this corporate and financial hub of Johannesburg.

The group exhibition, displaying a body of work individually created by participating artists, mainly during lockdown ia entitled The End is the Beginning. The participating artists are an interesting mix of not as yet known but promising artists, emerging artists and well established artists collected widely in South Africa and globally.

In alphabetical order the following are participating artists in this exhibition: Andrew Tshabangu, Asanda Kupa, Andile Komanis, Ayanda Mabulu, Dathini Mzayiya, Elizaveta Rukavishnikova, George Mulaudzi, Happy Dhlame, Mbongeni Buthlezi, Musa Xokelelo, Mncedi Madolo, Nompumelelo Ngoma, Olivier Company, Phumulani Ntuli, Sandile Radebe, and Tsakane Maubane.

The exhibition will run till January 15, 2021. !32 Art Gallery promises to have regular exhibitions, showcasing what it says contemporary art with investment value going forward.

“We would like to see an art piece selling for a R1 million here. Why not? That will happen,” said an enthusiastic Mulaudzi,  who is both a businessman and a visual artist, whose art pieces are also part of this group exhibition that officially opened the gallery and is co-curated by visual artist Happy Dhlame and curator Fulufhelo Mobadi.
