If you having been wishing for some time to one day have a shot at the art works of some of the leading artists in this country, you will soon have that opportunity. But you must surely talk to your bank manager prior to the auction sale as you are sure to be competing with others with similar intentions on the auction floor come September 18, 2022 in Cape Town.

Believe me you, I have been for years following some of these artists’ popularity with collectors, and the interest in their works is not going down. Instead, it keeps on growing, and this can only mean that you will be competing fiercely with others, and hence the need to speak to your bank manager. Part of that growth trajectory has been precipitated by the global art market’s focus on African art, especially contemporary art.

This is real and as you can see these are seasoned artists whose art works have been collected for years by many a collector for whatever reasons, but fortunately the same art works are on the market, and this is a special auction in many ways.  For example this particular lot leading the auction is from a single owner, adding another impetus to the need to compete with others who might be interested in this art collection and heritage and the rest that will be on offer.

“Strauss & Co, Africa’s leading art auction house, is very pleased to announce details of Cape Town Auction Week, a four-day series of auctions featuring art, design, jewellery and wine that runs from 18 to 21 September 2022. Led by an excellent presentation of artworks by Dorothy Kay, William Kentridge, J. H. Pierneef, Alexis Preller, Gerard Sekoto and Irma Stern, many fresh to market and all offered at favourable estimates, Cape Town Auction Week also includes distinguished single-owner collections of South African painting, Cape silver and East Asian ceramic pieces,” the auction houses says in a statement ahead of the auction.

“It is delight to once again be offering Dorothy Kay’s celebrated painting, Old Oyster Woman, which appeared on the cover of Strauss & Co’s first-ever auction catalogue in March 2009 and which recently featured in the exhibition Dream Invisible Connections: Mary Sibande and Dororthy Kay, held in July 2022 at Strauss & Co in Johannesburg,” says Bina Genovese,  a Managing Executive at Strauss & Co. “In the ensuing years, we have earned a solid reputation for handling large single-owner collections and creatively promoting artists in our curated sessions. The catalogue for Cape Town Auction Week includes a strong focus on private collections of art and design. Important painters such as Albert Adams, Robert Hodgins, Alfred Thoba and Vladimir Tretchikoff are also the subject of in-session artist focuses designed to guide collectors with their selections.”

Cape Town Auction Week commences on Sunday, 18 September 2022 at 11am with a presentation by Strauss & Co’s wine department. Composed of a total of eight sessions held over four days at Brickfield Canvas in Woodstock, Cape Town, the programme for Cape Town Auction Week includes three evening sessions. Two of these premier slots are devoted to single-owner collections.
