By CityLife Arts Writer
Those who will be in Randburg this weekend and are interested in art, may do well to consider two exhibitions in their neighbourhood, one a solo exhibition and the other one a group exhibition.
The solo exhibition titled Many journeys: Passage through time, memory, and transformation is that of Edward Selematsela which will open at Jeleni and Phindi, Randburg Square center, Level 6, Corner Oak & Sentrum on 2 November – 07 December 2024, between 12 – 5pm, curated by: Ivy Rihlampfu.
Edward Selematsela, presents a captivating exploration of personal and collective experiences, rooted in the artist’s rich cultural heritage and life journey. Known for his ability to merge traditional African aesthetics with contemporary artistic techniques, Selematsela invites audiences to reflect on the myriad paths that shape human existence.
The exhibition delves into the layers of identity formation, rural landscapes and people. Through
Selematsila’s unique approach to mixed media, the exhibition is a visual narrative of resilience,
memory, and cultural expression, creating a compelling dialogue between past and present.
Selematsela is known for his intricate use of mixed media, blending painting with elements of sculpture and found objects to create textured, layered compositions. His pieces are often symbolic, using materials that evoke a sense of history and connection to the earth, such as
natural pigments and wood. The exhibition also highlights the importance of rural spaces in preserving cultural traditions. Through depictions of farming, rural customs, and village life, the works underscore how rural areas serve as custodians of culture and community values in the face of globalization.
The relationship between people and their environment is a recurring theme, showcasing how rural inhabitants rely on the land for sustenance, culture, and identity. The artworks emphasize
the symbiotic relationship between humanity and nature, illustrating how landscapes shape the
lives and livelihoods of those who inhabit them. His artistic narrative reflects a hopeful outlook on the capacity for renewal and growth.
“Many Journeys” is an evocative exhibition that bridges the past and present, exploring the complexities of identity, and cultural preservation. Through his innovative use of mixed media and symbolic storytelling, Selematsela offers a deeply personal yet universally resonant reflection on the journeys we all take. This exhibition is a testament to the artist’s ability to blend tradition with contemporary expression, offering viewers an immersive and thought-provoking experience.
