Galore of classical music and film festival at Theatre on the Square in Sandton

In addition to hosting the Joburg Film Festival from 31 January to the February 5, 2023, Sandton’s Theatre on the Square will be presenting some incredible and diverse musical treats in February, as it starts the year on the right note.
On Friday 20th January, well known pianist from the UK, CHARLES WIFFEN (formerly from South Africa), will open their weekly Classical Music Concert programme. Charles will be performing a work by South African composer Bongani Ndodana Breen as well as works by Beethoven, Chopin and Liszt. The theatre will then break for two weeks as it welcomes the return of the annual Joburg Film Festival – www.joburgfilmfestival.co.za at the theatre and on the Nelson Mandela Square.
Friday lunch hour concerts will then resume on the 10th February with LET’S DO IT – a kaleidoscope of familiar and original music and song with pianist REXLEIGH BUNYARD and vocalist CECILIA ERASMUS.
This will be followed on the Friday 17th February with a classical presentation of PIAZZOLLA… AND SOMETHING ELSE with MIROSLAV CHAKARYAN (violin), SUSAN MOUTON (cello) and CHANIE JONKER (piano).
· On the 24th February international pianist, LAURA PAUNA, will grace the stage with a programme that will include works by Brahms (Opus 29 waltzes) and the Beethoven (Sonata opus 27 no. 90)
In the evenings the theatre from the 7th – 19th February, the theatre will be presenting leading musical theatre pianist, musical director and conductor, DUPREEZ STRAUSS in a magical new show, DREAMLAND. Strauss has been co-music director and orchestra conductor for Disney’s The Lion King musical, internationally. DREAMLANDwill present the best of Disney songs and stories like you’ve never heard them before!
On Sunday 12th February the fabulous CAT SIMONI returns to South Africa and to Theatre on the Square for a swinging Jazz session with TONY YOKO and his jazz band. A programme filled with toe tapping jazz favourites and songs, will lift the spirits on a Sunday afternoon.
Keeping us swinging in February, will also include ZULU IN MY BLUES with the wonderful THEMBA MSOMI and his famous band, on Sunday 26th February.
Some of the other artists who will be sharing the stage at our weekly classical music will include leading electric and classical violinist, Elena Zlatkova, pianist Peter Cartwright, violinist Rupert Marshall Luck, clarinettist Morne van Heerden, flautist Malane Hofmeyr Burger, pianist Sonja van Zyl, the Wits Trio with violinist Zanta Hofmyer, pianist Malcolm Nay and cellist Susan Mouton, classical guitarist Carl Straussner, violinist Jonathan Meyer and cellist Peta Anne Holdcroft.
