Ilovemelville, the new pride of Melville community

By CityLife Arts Writer

Lockdown has been hard for many people  Right?

But one thing that has happened during this time is people becoming creative in how they responded to these long periods unheard of before period of social isolation.

One good thing that has happened in the north Western suburb of Meliville is the emergence of a new voice, a community radio called Ilovemelville.

With the announcement of the COVID-19 lockdown in March and faced with our industry shutdown and with the cancellation of all planned work this year, Mark and Trevor created The Grumpy Old Homos as a means to keep working and keep us from doing something irresponsible.

“With no budget and with the support of so many we launched our silly, yet sometimes practical, vids to Facebook and YouTube, hardly anticipating the reaction from all around the world. Yikes, it seemed we had created a monster! And here we are, two audacious Ethel clutchbag South African performers who tackle everyday stuff, gleefully grunting through these with a humour that lives in a big black box with a pink ribbon on top. Our only hope is to make you laugh, oh, and to make us filthy rich. Hahahaha! (In the meantime are recruiting investors to take the Grumpies to the next level,” the duo said this week.

Now this Melville’s exciting new community radio station  is to to present The Grumpy Old Homo Show Pride Patsy, with gracious support from event sponsors, to wrap up Pride Month on Thursday 29th October 2020.  A party with a simultaneous livestream broadcast with special in-studio guests including the very daaahling Robert Whitehead (aka Barker Haynes from Isidingo) and the intergalactic, shape-shifting kwaai diva, Umlilo.

“While we pop down to the studio for our show the party continues upstairs with your host Toni Morkel along with the latin sounds of the Avalon Quartet featuring Brian Smith (Flutes), Wian Joubert (Percussion), Ryan Solomon (Guitar) & Lex Futshane (Bass). With a few surprises up our sleeve we end the evening with a boom-bam performance by Umlilo and his gorgeous dancers, Llewellyn Mnguni and Kyle Rossouw.

Come have a Patsy (Party) with us with complimentary Dora’s and munchies. We gratefully acknowledge the support of our event sponsors: BarDeli Catering, Community, Emoji Marketing, FarmFreshOnline, Life+Lemons=Lemonade, Buz Publicity, Distillery Road Gin, SateCreative, Auckland Park Florist & Pernod-Ricard.
