Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra geared for early Spring Season
By CityLife Arts Writer
The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) continues the tradition of the World Symphony Series with their upcoming Early Spring Symphony Season programme, presenting a captivating line-up of international conductors and soloists, welcoming familiar faces and exciting debut performers.
“We are encouraged and excited to continue to bring another season of beautiful music following the remarkable response to the recent JPO Seasons. The sold-out concerts are testimony to the public’s strong appetite for symphony concerts and the standard of performance we are presenting” says JPO CE and artistic director Bongani Tembe.
As August is our country’s National Women’s Month, the JPO joins all South Africans in saluting the women who give of themselves in service to communities across the globe. To this end, we are privileged to welcome two young powerhouse maestri to our podium: the acclaimed Polish-British conductor Ewa Strusińska and the internationally renowned Panamanian-American maestra Kalena Bovell. Both of these artists have been making waves on the international concert circuit, garnering honours not only for themselves, but for the orchestras with whom they work.
The JPO’s Early Spring Season kicks off on Thursday 8 August under the baton of Daniel Boico, leading the JPO. The soloist for this concert is young classical saxophonist Jonathan Radford who has been recognised for his virtuosity and engaging musicianship. On the programme for the evening is Glazunov’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.
Concert 2 of the Season welcomes violinist Emily Sun, whose powerful sound and compelling interpretations have won her international recognition. The orchestra performs popular favourites Barber’s Concerto for Violin and Beethoven’s Symphony No 7 under the baton of conductor, Ewa Strusinska.

Conductor Kalena Bovell appears for the third concert of the season, with a programme featuring acclaimed pianist Pallavi Mahidhara who takes the spotlight in the evening’s centrepiece, Saint-Saëns Concerto for Piano No. 2. The programme also includes Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5.
The JPO will wrap up its Early Spring Season on Thursday 29 August, under the baton of Daniel Boico, whose return to our stages is always welcomed by our audiences. The spectacular programme features Beethoven Concerto for Piano No. 5, performed by Antonio Chen Guang.
