National Film & TV Awards South Africa Announces 2024 Nominees                       Connecting South Africa to the World through Film & Television

By Edward Tsumele, CITYLIFE/ARTS Editor

When  I received an inquiry from the National Film and TV Awards office in London last week about the possibility of receiving an embargoed media release about the nominees for this year’s awards, with a view to publishing the story in this publication for today (Monday September 23, 2024, I was at first confused. Confused because somehow I thought well the South African Film and Television awards have undergone a major brand revamp. Somehow intrigued, I immediately realised that these are in fact the prestigious international award ceremony, the National Film and TV Awards that have franchises in the US, UK and Australia among other leading film and TV destination countries worldwide.  It turns out that with 7.5 million members, this leading award ceremony for actors, TV and film productions were in fact launched last year in this country, with little fanfare.

Little fanfare or no fanfare at last year’s launch of this leading entertainment award ceremony, the reality now is the 26 year old award ceremony is here in South Africa, and its second ceremony in South Africa will take place at the monumental Opera Theatre at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria on November 9, 2024.

This is indeed good news for the South African creative sector in general, and the TV ad film subsector in particular to have a ceremony of this nature taking place in the country, in of course addition to our own South African Film and Television Awards-the more the better for the sector. This has proved to be a catalyst in the past instead of being an unnecessary competition for a market that is still to realise its full potential compared to its overseas counterparts, such as Hollywood for example.  During the height of the growth of the South African music industry in the early 2000s, we had two music awards ceremonies that took place incidentally at the same venue of course on different dates, and both events were hugely popular and well attended. The South African Music Awards (SAMA) were inward looking, rewarding recording artists based and practising their craft in South Africa, whole the Kora All Africa Music awards were outward looking, rewarding artists from anywhere on the African continent, including South African musicians, and each time these two ceremonies took place at Sun City Resort, it was a big event attracting hordes of people and boosting tourism in the North West. Those two ceremonies also helped to develop African talent, opening market access to these musicians.

And so the entry of the National Film and TV Awards ceremony into the South African market should be understood against the background of what the Kora All Africa Music Awards and the South African Musi9c Awards achieved during that time –and that is developing the music industry and giving local talent to enter for two prestigious ceremonies.

It is therefore a welcome development to have the new kid on the block in the film and TVF awards the national Film and TV awards that is here. And encouragingly the finalists in the ranks of actors, TV and film productions indeed represent the best from this country, meaning that the new kid on the block has raised the bar when it comes to recognising artistic talent in film and television. The entry of this new award ceremony is definitely set to disrupt the local film and TV award sector for the better.

Therefore the National Film Academy, the company behind this ceremony has today (Monday September 3, 2024) announced the full list of this year’s 2nd annual prestigious  National Film & TV Awards South Africa (NFTA) celebrating the finest achievements in the film and television industry in South Africa. With over 1.7 million public submissions received this year, the NFTA continues its mission to elevate and showcase South African talent on a global stage, connecting the local industry to international audiences.

With a rich 26-year history, the National Film Academyis one of the world’s largest film and TV organizations, boasting over 7.5 million members globally. As the driving force behind prestigious awards such as the National Film Awards UK, National Film & TV Awards USA, and National Reality Television Awards, the Academy expanded into South Africa last year, introducing the flagshipNational Film & TV Awards. The 2nd annual South African edition of the NFTA is set to take place at theOpera Theatre in Pretoria on November 9th, 2024.

Sara Kensington,Global Partnerships Directorat theNational Film Academy commented “As the only awards show of its kind to expand into South Africa, the NFTA stands out with its unique vision of promoting South African talent to the world. The 2024 edition promises a grand celebration of South African excellence, with the ceremony set for November 9th,2024, at the prestigious Opera Theatre,”  she continued… South African film and television have long been a reflection of the nation’s rich cultural tapestry. Our ongoing theme, Connecting South Africa to the World through Film and Television,” underscores our commitment to ensuring that South Africa’s global impact of local storytelling and talent are recognised worldwide”.

The National Film & TV Awards South Africawill be broadcast to 15 countries, showcasing the depth and breadth of South African movies and talent to a global audience. The awards will also be streamed live on Voovix TV, a leading European streaming platform with over 4.5 million subscribers, now available in South Africa.
