Nduduzo Makhathini to perform at Sibikwa Arts Centre’s Phola Vibez Jazz festival

He has certainly cemented his foothold on both South African and international jazz scenes. A highly respected jazzman known fro drawing his inspiration heavily from his deep Zulu background, Makhathini’s known for his original lyrics that are spiritually uplifting as he taps from his soul to bring out music that resonates with many people.

Not only has he become a jazz giant of music  in South Africa, but internationally as well as when the coronavirus situation allows it these days, he is always travelling between South Africa and one or more international destinations to deliver a dose of his healing sounds. In fact at the time of writing, the jazzman was out of the country, for a date with his several fans overseas.

However his local fans will be happy to know that they have a date with the hugely talented jazzman in December at Sibikwa Arts Centre in Ekurhuleni. As usually, the fans are sure to receive a dose of healing from the decorated jazzman and music academic.

“Since Sibikwa’s launch of its Phola Vibez Jazz Sessions, the event has fast become a fixture for many Jazz enthusiasts. This year, in association with Concerts SA, the Norwegian Embassy and SAMRO, the Sibikwa Arts Centre is proud to host Pan-African Jazz extraordinaire Nduduzo Makhathini on 5December 2021, at 3pm.

A leading hub for the arts and entertainment destination in Ekurhuleni, Sibikwa has hosted numerous Phola Vibez Jazz Sessions over the years which have boasted performances by well-known Jazz musicians such as Khaya Mahlangu, Banda Banda, Shane Cooper, Sisonke Xonti and Tumi Mogorosi. This year promises to be as vibrant and sonically gratifying as the Sibikwa Arts Centre presents its Phola Vibez Jazz featuring multi-award winning, internationally acclaimed musician Nduduzo Makhathini, who will be accompanied by a seasoned band,” confirmed Sibikwa in a stament released yesterday, November 11, 2021.

Born and raised in the rugged hillscapes of umGungundlovu in KwaZulu-Natal,, a peri-urban landscape in which music and ritual practices were symbiotically linked; is the premise from which Makhathini’s work emanates. His work is also influenced by an upbringing infused with traditional South African music, spiritual music, Afro-Jazz as well as American Jazz.

“Sibikwa prides itself on promoting tradi-contemporary artistic expression, and in our current society adapting to digital platforms and online performance, this year’s iteration of Phola Vibez Jazz will be presented live and will be live-streamed, for those further afar to join in on what promises to be an incredible experience.
