Pianist and scholar, Sibusiso Mashiloane wins prestigious award

Award-winning jazz pianist and scholar, Sibusiso Mashiloane has been awarded the prestigious HSS Award by National Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences over the weekend.

Mashiloane, a composer of note was awarded the statuette in recognising his artistic depth showcased in his 6th album Music from My People.

Speaking to CTYLIFE/ARTS, Mashiloane said as much as he has won many accolades, but this award is deeply meaningful to him.

“It’s not only validating my work, but also serves as a powerful reminder to our people, particularly the younger generation, of the importance of tradition and cultural music – the very foundation of our musical identity,” said Mashiloane.

In  Music from My People, Mashiloane reflects the composer’s sonic collaboration, geographic travel and pure intergenerational inspiration and influence. The album seamlessly blends the vibrant tapestry of African music styles with the sophistication of Jazz. This fusion creates a unique and cohesive listening experience where diverse musical elements come together harmoniously.

The album features several industry stalwarts, which was an important factor for Mashiloane who wanted different communities to speak through the music, such as percussionist Tlale Makhene, guitarist Bheki Khoza and tenor saxophone player Khaya Mahlangu.

Generations also converge in his music, as he is featuring young talents, some of whom have studied under his supervision, such as bassist Qhubekanu Mthethwa, trumpet player Thabo Sikhakhane and vocalist Wandithanda Makandula.

Music from My People stood out amongst other submissions, with the jury commending its high production quality and a level of composition that reflects the artist’s experience. The Durban based pianist’s playing is characterised by both technical finesse and a dynamic style.

 His ability to guide the music with precise timing allows the album’s elements to seamlessly interweave and evolve. Each track presents a distinct soundscape, drawing inspiration from South Africa’s cultural heritage. Collaborations with a multitude of talented musicians further elevate the album, their collective contributions and individual performances solidifying its recognition.

On the other hand, Mashiloane’s ongoing research, focusing on the concept of “the sounds of home” through his PhD studies, directly influences his creative process, evident in “Music from My People.

 This critically acclaimed album joins a string of successes for the musician, including 6 previous awards and nominations for prestigious accolades like the SAMAs and the AFRIMA Awards.
