Music lovers in Johannesburg and London will experience what promises to be an exciting journey of jazz, alternative music sound and contemporary African music sound starting this Saturday at the Market Theatre before travelling to London.

Dubbed Sikelela: The Road to the Barbican Market Theatre, the concert features real talent on the South African contemporary music scene, and one would not be left wiser if they missed this one.

Sikelela celebrates a tradition of Ingoma as a practice in the intimate exercise of liberation in action.

Leomile

Taking the cue from the word Sikelela meaning “blessing” – from the first phrase in the South African national anthem – this event celebrates a tradition of Ingoma as a practice in the intimate exercise of liberation in action. This special concert invites the visionaries from the current scene which is referred to as the avant-garde of the Jazz and live music scene from South Africa.

“Sikelela… the Road to the Barbican, is the precursor to a celebration of South African Jazz at the Barbican Centre in London as part of the London Jazz Festival on the 24th of November.  The London iteration will take place two weeks after the Market Theatre concert and is titled ‘Sikelela, Thirty Years On’.” Says SiyabongaMthembu, The Brother Moves On member and curator of both the Johannesburg and London events.

“Opening the Matinee show we have Litsomo – a collaborative project featuring your favourite indie folk storytellers Leomile, Muneyi and Kekelingo. Bokani Dyer and AndileYenana in duo format, will showcase the beauty of keys and synths. Closing out the matinee show we have The Brother Moves On featuring TumiMogorosi and Malcolm Jiyane. The matinee show is PG friendly, so parents bring your kids for a musical blessing.” Mthembu adds.
