The Arts & Culture Trust announces the Nyoloha Scholarship Programme T-shirt design competition
By CityLife Arts Writer
If you have a flair for design or enjoy being creative, then it’s time to get your artistic juices flowing. Think fresh, think funky and make a visual statement for young people who are working to take their place in the arts and culture sector. Your original youthful T-shirt concept could become the signature design of the 2023 Arts and Culture Trust (ACT) Nyoloha Programme. Whether it uses striking visuals or inspiring typography, how does your T-shirt design capture the spirit of this year’s theme, ‘#ImpACTingFutures’, which focuses on realising a digital, innovative and sustainable future for young artists through their field of art.
What’s in it for you? Not only will you contribute to a meaningful cause, but also your design could be featured on official 2023 ACT Nyoloha Scholarship Programme merchandise, gaining recognition on our social media platforms, and you’ll be awarded an MTN merchandise hamper plus a cash prize worth R2 500!
Whether it’s digital or visual arts, dance, music, acting or singing, let your creativity be inspired by the theme ‘ImpACTing Futures’ – run wild. When conceptualising your T-shirt design, include elements of your past, culture and heritage that inspire your creativity. How do these topics ImpACT your future and the art you create? What kind of artistic future do you envision for yourself? Incorporate the style of work that matters to you as a designer in the final T-shirt design and what you perceive as innovative or important to you as a designer.
The application process for entering the competition has three steps. To enter, applicants must first SMS their name and surname to 45967. ‘Calling all South Africans to join the fun by submitting their Nyoloha Scholarship Programme T-shirt design competition entry. We encourage people of all ages to think laterally, rev up their creativity and visually show how ‘#ImpACTingFutures’ through the creative process will develop young people in the arts and culture sector,’ says Jessica Denyschen, CEO of the Arts & Culture Trust. ‘Through the introduction of the ACT NSP T-shirt design competition we are creating an opportunity for average South Africans to showcase their talent and creative flair.’
The ACT Nyoloha Scholarship Programme is an undergraduate scholarship programme aimed at providing opportunities for school-leavers to pursue a tertiary qualification in the visual and performing arts. In partnership with Nedbank, Sun International, the Market Theatre, the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) and the Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights Organisation (DALRO), ACT has offered scholarships since 2009. Following a two-year interruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2022 relaunch of the programme was introduced in partnership with long-term sponsors and partners of ACT, Sun International and Nedbank, as well as Business and Arts South Africa (BASA), under a new organisational strategy. ACT NSP 2023 joint initiative creates an opportunity to fund higher education for young South African performing artists as well as visual and digital artists. One successful applicant in each category will receive a fully paid undergraduate scholarship, valued at up to R350 000, to study at an accredited tertiary South African arts institution of their choice.
Through the programme, talented and ambitious young people from across the country are introduced to the world of professional arts through an intensive week of training, talks and performances, culminating in a showcase and exhibition. Working with industry professionals and experts, participants gain valuable experience and the opportunity to work with other future artists from different backgrounds. Tobie Badenhorst, Head of Group Sponsorships and Cause Marketing at Nedbank, says: ‘The ACT Nyoloha Scholarship Programme significantly contributes to the sustainable development and growth of our arts and culture heritage. The participants are our future rising stars who will advance and preserve our country’s history, present and future narrative through the arts. We believe in these artists and it’s so inspiring to see them pursuing their ambitions and dreams. In the same vein, we cannot wait to see the designs that all the talented young artists in our country send in for the programme’s 2023 T-shirt.’
Heidi Edson, Group Socioeconomic Development (SED) Specialist at Sun International, says: ‘The ACT NSP not only provides an opportunity for qualifying talented and ambitious young people from across the country to study for an arts degree; it also opens the door for South Africans of all ages to share their creative talents by entering the Nyoloha T-shirt design competition.’
