Pan MacMillan’s three titles won big at the National Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (NiHSS) awards ceremony on Sunday as the institute the 7th Humanities and Social Sciences Awards. The awards are open to South African publishers, scholars based in South African universities and independent artists linked to universities.
“Pan Macmillan and Picador Africa are proud to announce our award-winning titles in three categories:
Best Non-Fiction: Biography
Scatterling of Africa: My Early Years by Johnny Clegg (Pan Macmillan South Africa)
This is Johnny Clegg’s origin story, as he wrote it and wanted it told. It is the story of how he came to realise that identity can be a choice, and home is a place you leave and return to as surely as the seasons change.
Best Fiction: Novel
They Got To You Too by Futhi Ntshingila (Picador Africa)
The book explores how lockdown created unlikely connections – like that of her protagonists, an ageing Apartheid police general and his nurse, the daughter of SA struggle activists.
The Lost Language of the Soul by Mandla Langa (Picador Africa)
The novelcaptures the perspective of a vulnerable yet determined child and the clashing emotions within him as he seeks to reunite his family,” the publisher said in a statement.
