How education transformed my life after trauma says intern, Mbali Mpolokeng

By Mbali Mpolokeng

In today’s fast-paced and competitive world, I believe it is of utmost importance for African youth, including myself, to actively develop our skills. Taking a holistic approach and pursuing a diploma or degree allows us to unlock our true potential and embark on a transformative journey of personal growth.

I am Mbali, a radiant individual whose warm and friendly nature brightens the lives of those around me. With a genuine smile that lights up the room, I am a beacon of kindness and compassion but what truly sets me apart is my passion for giving back. I embody the true spirit of philanthropy. One of my greatest joys is witnessing the beauty of a breathtaking sunset. For me, sunsets symbolise the perfect balance between tranquillity and possibility.

Before a life-altering incident, I thrived in debating and public speaking, receiving recognition and awards. However, everything changed abruptly when I became a victim of a violent attack. I was stabbed and forced to ingest pills in an attempt to be abducted, leaving me unable to walk for three months. The most painful wounds were the loss of my ability to express myself eloquently in public. Yet, amidst the darkness, hope emerged. I embarked on self-discovery and resilience, realising that regaining my voice required skill development. June 16 serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made for justice and equality. Focusing on personal growth empowers both ourselves and others. Through perseverance, we can overcome adversity, rediscover our voices, and uplift society. The best of me is yet to come.

I landed an internship at Africa Communications Media Group – Marco. As a finance, admin, and PR intern, I am exposed to a dynamic and fast-paced environment that shaped me in profound ways. The experience teaches me the importance of skills development for interns, providing invaluable opportunities to learn and grow both professionally and personally. As a youth, investing in skills development not only enhances our employability but also cultivates self-confidence, empowers innovation, and equips you with the tools needed to shape a promising future

Furthermore, working at ACG under the mentorship of my direct manager, who has years of experience has empowered me to believe in myself and build confidence. Her support, encouragement, and constructive feedback have been instrumental in my journey of self-discovery. Challenging assignments, constructive critiques, and recognition of her achievements have instilled in me the confidence to take on new responsibilities and pursue my goals with passion and determination.

Skills development plays a pivotal role in the lives of young individuals, empowering them to navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. As we approach June 16th in South Africa, it is essential to highlight the importance of skills development in the youth. June 16th is known as Youth Day in South Africa, commemorating the Soweto Uprising in 1976 when students protested against the apartheid government’s education policies. This serves as a reminder of the power of education and skills development in shaping the future of young individuals. Providing opportunities for youth to develop their skills equips them with the necessary tools to overcome challenges, secure better employment prospects, and contribute to the growth and development of their communities and the nation as a whole.
