Peeling Shadows – A new play with freeky deeky mambo jumbo voodoo hoodoo mystic vibes

KWASHA!in collaboration with the Market Theatre Laboratory and the Windybrow Arts Centre will be bringing a new production calledPeeling Shadows, devised and directedby the theatre company,to the Ramolao Makhene Theatre from 30 October to 8 November.

Peeling Shadowsis the latest theatrical experience from KWASHA! This endearing play is about a detective named Pamela, on a quest to solve an investigation regarding three missing fraudsters. As the case turns cold, she encounters a mysterious young girl named Boang, wandering the streets alone. Little does Pamela know that Boang may just be the key she needs to crack the case.

Peeling Shadows is inspired by the pervasive South African Urban Legends that reside in our collective consciousness. It explores the lives and importance of essential workers through myths and draws attention to how often we allow those legends and myths prevent us from connecting with each other. The production aims to open minds, wash eyes and help us all see each other for who we really are.

KWASHA! the 3rdcontinues to thrive in making work that is bold in confronting our current socio-economic environment, work that dares South Africans, in particular, to dream past their current realities.The company members aim further to create and devise cutting edge work that challenges the different perspectives of narrative in our society on a level of theatre work and thematic. By committing to crash through the glass ceiling, the company members aim to create a broader interest and access to the arts and its spaces.

KWASHA! has in the past few months created various works that were presented in the digital space for audiences to enjoy.  The company worked with Standard Bank Young Artistof the Year for theatre in 2020, Jefferson Tshabalala onSeen Pha kwa JB! Of prose, of poems, of plays.KWASHA!also embarked on a digital intercontinental play, with three continents andnine countries titled The Art of Facing Fear, by Brazilian based theatre companyOsSatyrosTeatro. The company members have recently directed 6 shows for an online festival under the theme The Fluidity of Resistance in collaboration with PoPArt centre.
