–Skhothane pray The Market Theatre Laboratory second-year students of 2021 present SKULLKANDY, a Skhothane play by international playwright Mongiwekhaya, writer of the 2016 smash hit, I SEE YOU. SKULLKANDYis all about what it takes to make it in a world addicted to money. There are two types of people: those with money (skhothanes) and those without (situations waiting to happen).
Inspired by the Skhothane movement, SKULLKANDY is a dance thriller, expanding on the core aesthetic qualities of this street culture: dance, verbal combat, and of course, High Street Fashion. The story is told through a kaleidoscope of aggressive, charismatic personalities bursting onto the scenes in quick passages of financial combat; everything is negotiation, everyone has a price and losing out is not an option.
Slang for “hustlers”, Skhothane is a subculture of status, and wealth-on-display as a fashion statement. It’s history comes from a long line of youthful street cultures such as Pantsula and Umswenko. Skhothanes are the most outrageous, with their verbal acrobatics, razor sharp fashion sense and willingness to waste, all in the name of glory in a society that has precious little to waste.
SKULLKANDY is written and directed by Mongiwekhaya, writer of the award-winning play I SEE YOU which premiered at the Royal Court in London, the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town and the Market Theatre in Johannesburg.
Choreographed by Joyce Hopane, a gifted dancer and choreographer whose works span from the Lion King, to Mafikizolo and the 2021 SAFTA awards, this original new production is a must see.
