Standard Bank Young Artist Modise Sekgothe to make Lit.Culture debut
By CityLife Arts Writer
Modise Sekgothe will make his first appearance at Johannesburg’s Lit.Culture Books on 30 May 2026 with The Wilderness and Other Worlds, a one-night performance that revisits earlier work while opening toward new creative directions.

The performance marks a return to solo exploration for Sekgothe after an extended collaborative season. Drawing on The Wilderness and the projects that preceded it, the show traces a path through years of writing and performance while offering a glimpse of what lies ahead.
Blending spoken word and sound, The Wilderness and Other Worlds unfolds as an encounter between voice and repetition, where language loops back on itself in meditation and lament. Wailings and words drawn from the darkest parts of human experience are reshaped into markers that seek not only to name the darkness, but to move through it.

Sekgothe recently published Gabo Legwala, adding another chapter to a body of work that continues to move between poetry, theatre and performance with precision.
Copies of Gabo Legwala will be available for purchase on the day.
.The event takes place at Lit.Culture on 30 May at 17:00. Tickets are R150 via Quicket and R200 at the door. Book your tickets here: https://www.quicket.co.za/events/376053-the-wilderness-and-other-worlds/#/
