Those who love fine music, specifically jazz, have now planned how they will spend their weekend –heading to the country’s prime jazz feast, the Sandard Bank Joy of Jazz, which is will be hosted a the Sandton Convention Centre, from September 29 to September 30, 2023.
What some are probably doing right now is simply putting the finer details, such as which artists to see, on what stage and what time. It is no longer a question of whether one is attending or not. Unless of course something huge, such as tragedy that may prevent one from attending this year’s jazz feast. Already someone I know told me they were dealing with this dilemma –attending the jazz feast on Friday, attending a family funeral in Pretoria on Saturday morning, and then come back to Johannesburg in time to attend the last league of the festival on Saturday. This is what the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz has become to many who love their jazz, to the extent that they have to juggle around their personal responsibilities on the jazz weekend so that they are still able to attend the event.
This year, the line-up is quite impressive, ranging from top notch local talent to international artists to die-for to see, both established and young. The highlights for the feast includes tribute shows organised to honour fallen and seasoned South African talent that have left a mark on the jazz scene, such as young jazz talent Titi Luzipo honouring the late jazz vocalist Gloria Bosman (September 30), Hertbie Tsoaeli, with Dalisu Ndlazi and Viwe Mkizwana, paying tribute to Johnny Dyani (September 29), Billy Monama, paying tribute to Allen Kwela (September 29) and Langa Mabuso and Max-Hoba, paying tribute to Jabu Khanyile (September 30).
Others to look forward to include Robert Glasper, Nduduzo Makhathini, Andrea Vollenweider, Ernie Smith, Marcus Wyatt, Carlo Mombelli, McCoy Mrubatha and Braasskap, Zoe Modiga, Ami Faku, Simphiwe Dana, Inkabi Zezwe Reframed (featuring Ndabo Zulu, and Linda Sikhakhane on horns, and Samthing Soweto.
But this year, it is not only jazz that you will feel everywhere, though that would be enough for many.
That is to say the 2023 Standard Bank Joy of Jazz certainlyreturns with the promise of exhilarating experiences for music lovers to Feel the Jazz, Everywhere!
However the music is not only back and exciting but the experience gets even better with the Jazzy Joburg Market – an initiative in partnership with the Joburg Tourism Company, supporting local businesses. Various SMMEs and creatives get to showcase their work at the market which runs from Friday the 29th to Saturday the 30th September 2023 at the Sandton Convention Centre, leading up to the main festival.
The Market will be officially opened by the Department of Economic Development’s MMC, Councillor Nomoya Mnisi, as well as the City Manager Mr Floyd Brink.
The Market is not new to the establishment, it was previously hosted at the Nelson Mandela Square and known for its commitment to celebrating up-and-coming artists. The market has seen the likes of Zano, Dudu Makhoba, Vuyo Tyholo and many others share the stage while locals and internationals get to enjoy our local cuisine and buy the finest garments and jewellery from our local designers and crafters.
This year is no different, festival-goers get to experience an even elevated experience of good music, food and fashion.
The jazzy night market will be taking place concurrently with the festival and will house the MarketPlace stage. This will feature the “Lounge Jazz”, where the slick sonic selectors on the decks, DJ HAPPY J as well as Di Castro, along with the inimitable maestro DJ KENZHERO EXPERIENCE, featuring Melo B Jones on vocals and Drum Machine and Me-Ko on Keys and Trumpet, will be performing live at the Jazzy Joburg Market.
Africa’s premier jazz festival takes place on 29 and 30th September 2023 at the
Sandton International Convention Centre, with an exciting line-up of headlining jazzstars from across the world.
