By CityLife Arts Writer
The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra presents its popular, annual Valentine’s Gala Concert on Friday 14 February which promises to be an unforgettable concert featuring well-known classics and love-themed songs for all to enjoy.
Under the baton of well-known conductor, Eddie Clayton, the concert will feature accomplished vocalists, Zita Pretorius and Monde Msuntwana, whose powerful performances will melt your heart. Acclaimed and versatile trumpeter, Adam Howard, adds a touch of magic to the evening, with soothing melodies.
The programme includes all-time favourites – Strauss’ Voices of Spring Waltz, Michael Bublé: Close your eyes, an excerpt from Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera, Miriam Makeba’s hit song NtyiloNtyilo and Marvin Gaye’s ‘Let’s Get It On’ – among others.
South African popular singer Zita Pretorius, known as a classical-crossover vocalist, performs across a spectrum of classical, opera and contemporary music, and has achieved great success with her recorded album and live performances.
Monde Msutwana, a seasoned performer, has been described as a ‘young man full of life, love and music’ and will take you along memories and emotions with soulful melodies and lyrics that pull at the heart strings.

Adam Howard’s accolades are many, having composed, produced, arranged and performed with many of South African’s top artists, and musically directed William Kentridge’s “Refuse The Hour” which toured the world. His performance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and his Johannesburg Big Band, coupled with a multitude of advertising awards, makes Howard a sought-after artist in the diverse musical landscape of our country.
Our compere for the evening, Masego Rahlaga, is a distinguished South African broadcast journalist and host, currently co-anchoring The South African Morning on eNCA. In addition to her news coverage, Masego also hosts Behind The Name a lifestyle, magazine, and book review show on the same channel.
Bongani Tembe, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the JPO said “The Valentine’s concert with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra provides a conducive environment for celebrating with loved ones, family and friends, whilst enjoying beautiful music.
