Volvo went all out when unveiling its electric 7-seater SUV, the Volvo EX90, at a star-studded event in Cape Town’s winelands on Tuesday last week.
The launch attracted a host of South African celebrities and social media influencers, including La Sizwe, Jessica Nkosi and her husband Thembinkosi Dlamini, songwriter and rapper KO, author Khaya Dlanga, and Ukhozi FM’s vibrant afternoon drive co-host Selbyounce Mkhize.
The evening was filled with entertainment, starting with a captivating performance by renowned storyteller and actress Gcina Mhlophe. In her performance, Mgcina celebrated the arrival of the beast in her performance which was followed by a group of violinists who performed various cover songs and even featured singer Msaki in one of their songs.

Guests enjoyed a luxurious experience, being chauffeured in a convoy of Volvo cars from the airport to The Cullinan Hotel in the heart of Cape Town’s CBD and then to the launch venue.
Born fully electric, the beast was unleashed just after all the music performances and there were no speeches about the car. The EX90, described by Volvo as a “versatile comfort for up to 7,” was revealed after the performances, emphasizing its ergonomic features designed for maximum comfort.
Although attendees were not given the chance to test drive the vehicle, they learned about its impressive range of approximately 600 kilometres on a single charge and its quick charging capability of about 30 minutes.

The EX90 is equipped with advanced safety features, including radars and cameras that enhance awareness and assist with parking, making it user-friendly even for those who typically struggle with reverse parking.

Its safety features include cutting-edge radars and cameras to help detect potential risks inside and outside the car, providing extra support when needed. “With four cameras providing a 360° view and flank sensors increasing awareness of objects at the side of the car, our system can help you park confidently even in confined spaces.

Even the code 8 drivers licence holders who hate to park a car in reverse, will enjoy parking EX 90 because everything is done with ease. If there is a risk of collision with other vehicles in the adjacent lane, BLIS can subtly adjust steering, helping keep you, your car and your loved ones right where you mean to be.”

La Sizwe said at the launch: “I’m just looking forward to the unveiling of the Volvo EX90. And my favourite feature on the car is the safety feature especially when reversing the car.”
