When nature calls in an artist’s life

For Rika Herbst, nature is her source of inspiration and plays a significant role in her work. With her unique ceramic pieces, she tried to capture the wonder of especially trees and exotic moments in nature.

“It is my intention to create textures that compel touch and provoke memory. I want to give my work a contemporary feel whilst enhancing the quality of the clay. Once created, each piece is a path to an expression which possesses an essence of life, a statement of being.

For Christine Williams, who has a fine arts background, the “satisfaction is to decorate the surfaces of hand built and thrown porcelain pieces with expressive and colourful brushstrokes. She too feels connected to nature – digging clay from wetlands where they live and stoking a wood kiln to fire her ceramics.

“I am finding that these contrasting and opposite outcomes in my ceramic pieces are helping me grow as an artist and a deeper understanding of the clay, the form and ultimately myself.”

The exhibition is opening on Saturday 7 August 2021 from 10h00 to 13h00 and it will be open to the public until Saturday 28 August 2021.
