Artist Thenjiwe Nkosi in conversation with exhibiting artists Pebofatso Mokoena and Frederick Clarke at Aspire Art

The WAV exhibition is a collaboration between Aspire Art and Studio Nxumalo -and is currently showing in Parkwood, and this Saturday, April 2, 2022, visual artist Thenjiwe Nkosi will be in discussion with Frederick Clarke and Pebofatso Mokoena about their joint exhibition.
“Every painting is, among other things, a work of translation. The artist translates some kind of mental and/or emotional energy into material form: colour, shape, line. From this idea, then, a question: what gets lost or added on the way? How does the artist get from Point A (heart or mind) to Point B (canvas) without losing what is most important? Pebofatso Mokoena and Frederick Clarke are two artists who appear to be looking for the most uninhibited routes between their imaginations and experiences and material form,” says Nkosi.
“Join us this coming Saturday, 2 April with the artist, Thenjiwe Nkosi, in a panel discussion with fellow artists Pebofatso Mokoena and Frederick Clarke o unpack the themes and methodologies of the works in the WAV exhibition and their own individual practice,” says Aspire Art.
Nkosi was born in 1980 in New York. She was raised there, in Harare and Johannesburg, where she now lives. She obtained her BA from Harvard University (2004) and her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York (2008).
Nkosi divides her time between studio work, performance, and navigating the field of art as social practice. Her second solo exhibition, Landings, is currently on view in Cape Town. .
