Getting a job in an environment of economic instability and somehow inconsistent economic growth, such as the current situation in South Africa, with the rate of unemployment among especially the youth being that high, it may be prudent for young people to carefully choose their career. Choosing the right course at institution of higher learning, both private and public, may be that difference between getting a job or starting a business and joining the ever stretching job queue.

One of the private higher institutions of learning, Eduvos has developed graphic design courses whose learners can either start their own businesses, work as freelancers or work for corporates.
One of its popular programme in its bouche of design courses is the BA in Graphic design courses which is offered both at under grade and post graduate levels. This is in edition to a foundation course, and a higher certificate course levels.

Speaking to CITYLIFE/ARTS in an interview recently after a student exhibition involving the college’s BA final year student exhibition, in which over 54 students showcased their work, Judith, the programme lead at the Bedfordview Campus, said that some of their graduates either are working for themselves, having started their own campus, while others either work as freelance service providers and in the corporate secor where they ply their trade as full-time employees in the brand and marketing departments of companies.

“We have a strong alumni network, and those who have graduated from here and are working often come back to speak and share their experiences with current students,” she said.
The educator said that apart from physical campuses found around the country, the institution also has an Online Campus, equally popular with those who wish to pursue education in the graphic design field. What the college offers in this filed is different from other courses offered by other institutions in the field.

“Our programme is different in that it is broad in scope, with students learning a variety of skills in this field,” she said.
In a way those skills the students gained during this programme was demonstrated by the showcase of student work on November 6, held at the Bedfordview Campus of Eduvos.
This portfolio showcase at its landmark Bedfordview Campus by students from their BA Graphic Design Programme. (See highlights from the 2024 Showcase here) in many ways was a showcase of the variety of skills the students have gained during the course of their studies on the programme as represented by what they showcased during the exhibition.
Designed and curated entirely by the students, many of whom participated and were awarded in the prestigious 2025 Student Gold Pack Awards by the Institute of Packaging SA, the exhibition showcased diverse creative projects, including branding, packaging, digital media, web design, and motion graphics. Students also interacted with industry professionals and other attendees, giving them a potential opportunity to launch their careers.
