Official Heritage Day celebrations go virtually this year

By CityLife Arts Writer

The official national Heritage Day celebrations this year are going virtually, the department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) confirmed yesterday. This decision is as a result of the current Covid-19 restrictions that impose restrictions on the number of people allowed to gather at both indoor and outside venues.

“South Africa commemorates Heritage Month in September for a variety of reasons, including the promotion of nation building and social cohesion. The government, through the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) and the Presidency, will commemorate National Heritage Day digitally on Friday, September 24, 2021, in conjunction with the Western Cape Province.

The 2021 virtual Heritage day will be celebrated under the theme: The year of Charlotte Maxeke: Celebrating South Africa’s Intangible Cultural Heritage”.

South Africans are called upon to celebrate and transfer their heritage because “It’s in Our Culture”.

Intangible Cultural Heritage provides individuals with a feeling of identity and belonging, as well as the accumulation of intellectual capital for current and future generations, in the framework of mutual respect for human, social, and cultural rights. It is critical that as a society, we pass down skills from generation to generation so that the young can learn from their elders. The function of South Africa’s official languages and linguistic variety as a transmitter of South Africa’s rich intangible cultural heritage and indigenous knowledge is central to these efforts and areas.

The Heritage Day recorded programme will be flighted on National Television Channels, radio stations and government social media platform (@GovernmentZa),” DSAC said in a statement.
