On Tuesday, 16 June 2026, learners from high schools across Soweto gather in Pimville, Soweto, for a digital skills educational programme in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Soweto Uprising with the keynote speech to be delivered by former Statistician General, Dr Pali Lehohla.

High school youth, teachers, community members, civil society organisations and technology experts will participate in AI For Good youth workshops and hackathons to develop solutions for real challenges in their own communities. The Youth Day Programme will offer practical technology and artificial intelligence skills training while empowering young people to showcase their innovative ideas for inclusive development.

“We work directly with young people in communities who have powerful ideas for change but often lack the platforms and support to bring them to life,” said Yazeed Osman, Co-founder of Liberation Hub NGO. “The June 16th Youth Day Programme connects young people with the technology tools and skills needed to lead, innovate, and solve problems in their own communities. When all of society works together with young people, we grow beyond celebration and we build lasting change.”
