A new film Studying Under the Barrel of a Gun honours legacy of student leaders who helped shape the nation’s democratic future

Award-winning filmmaker Tebogo Malope’s highly anticipatedhistorical feature film, Studying Under the Barrel of a Gun is finally here. This is a powerful cinematic tribute to the courageous student resistance movement that emerged during the June 12th 1986 apartheid military occupation of the University of the North (Turfloop).

Inspired by real historical events, the film explores a pivotal chapter in South Africa’s liberation struggle, highlighting the bravery, sacrifice and determination of students who stood against oppression in pursuit of justice, dignity and freedom.

Leading the cast is Kgwadi Selolo, a celebrated young stage performer making his first major big-screen appearance. His performance anchors a talented ensemble that includes Molefi Monaisa, Nat Ramabulana,Nthati Mosheshand Andre Odendaal, whose portrayals bring depth and authenticity to this important historical narrative.

Cornet Mamabolo appears in a special cameo role as iconic youth leader Peter Mokaba and also serves as an Executive Producer on the film. His contribution both on and off screen adds to the significance of this powerful historical production.

Limpopo’s finest, King Monada and comedian Mashabelaalso make appearances in the film.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Tebogo Malope, Studying Under the Barrel of a Gun examines the political, emotional and psychological realities faced by young activists during one of the most turbulent periods in South African history.
