Newly launched Melville Art Mile resonates with the community and visitors alike
Following the successful launch of the concept late last year, and the official launch in February, 2026, the Melville Art Mile event is on Thursday, 5 March 2026.

They did it the right way, in terms of the process. They first held a pilot late last year to gauge the necessity and even more appropriate the support of the stakeholders and the community for such an initiative.
But cleverly also they did not try to invent a wheel. Rather they followed a model that has proven to be successful elsewhere. I mean the Key Art Mile in Rosebank that, has been successful running for several years now, attracting both art lovers and quality exhibitions has seen some of shoot elsewhere, following the same model.

There is the Soweto Art Mille, which apart from other art nodes, includes the famous Vilakazi Street, in Orlando West. Not only does this part of Soweto lends itself well for such an art initiative, but it is also a place that already teams with interesting eateries, attracting the middle classes from the suburbs and tourists alike, looking from a kasi touch, but it is a place that is pregnant with struggle history. The street lays claims to have been a whole of two Nobel Prize winners –the late President of democratic South Africa Nelson Mandela and the late struggle activist Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Boasting the names of these important figures in the context of the struggle for freedom of South Africa, means that the area attracts international attention, a pull factor to international tourist from around the world, such as the UK, Germany, the US and France, among others. However in recent years entrepreneurs in the creative sector have added a new dimension aligned to the profile of the area’s visitors, tourists, whose pockets can afford art. They have introduced yet another vibrant art concept, Soweto Art Mile.

With the pilot of the Melville Art Mile launched late last year, and an official launch in February 2026, both of which were successful, the Melville art community working under the auspices of newly founded the Melville Art Mile Association (MAMA), their conviction about the viability of Melville Art Mile has been affirmed.
Also there could not have been a better place to launch such an initiative around the area. Melville historically has been regarded as a place teeming with art. It has art6 galleries, artist studios and restaurant that attract then young and moneyed, as well as international tourists.
It therefore, makes sense that such an area, must also have its own art mile, which takes place every first Thursday of the month.

And therefore, following the highly successful February launch that drew over 500 attendees and recorded zero safety incidents, the Melville Art Mile Association (MAMA) has announced its next ‘First Thursdays’ activation for Thursday, 5 March 2026.
The economic impact of the Melville Art Mile is already visible. Data from the February launch validated the event’s “Halo Effect,” with non-participating pubs and restaurants along 7th Street and 4th Avenue reporting sold-out inventory due to direct spillover from the art crowd.
“We are not interested in throwing a once-off party; we are building a cultural institution for Johannesburg,” says Aubrey Moloto, Chair of MAMA. “February proved the demand is there, with a 25% growth in attendance and a 4.4/5 public rating. For March, we are tightening our curation to the top 20 activations. It’s about sustainable growth, stringent quality control, and proving that the creative economy can tangibly revitalise our precinct.”
The March 5th event will run from 16:00 to 21:00. To ensure a seamless and safe pedestrian experience, the programme is supported by key precinct partners. Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty returns to provide dedicated wayfinding, while the Joburg Artist Market (JAM), together with Johannesburg Child Welfare, will be taking part and showing the non-profit company support as major stakeholders in the precinct.

Crucially, the event’s safety protocol remains the highest priority. Estelle Lötter, Operations Director for MAMA, explains: “Our priority from day one has been to prove that Joburgers can walk their streets safely at night. By integrating the Melville Security Initiative (MSI) with dedicated marshals and our Tuk-Tuk network, we’ve created a secure, continuous corridor. The zero-incident record from our launch isn’t luck; it’s a system we are rigorously scaling for March.”
